It’s a long time between the last races in the spring until ski season starts in the fall. And the saying goes that skiers are made in the summer. Make the most of summer!

Summer vacation is camp time for kids. Last week, the Trysil community in Norway pulled off a biathlon and cross-country ski camp for athletes age 12 to 15. The main focus of the camp was on building a solid foundation for the winter. And on providing a solid boost of motivation.

There is a lot to learn from these youth camps. Key concepts: fun, variation and social, as well as exercises and drills that are more difficult to do alone or that are hard to fit into hectic workweek schedules.

The kids trained three workouts per day for four days, varying between traditional training methods such as running, bounding and moosehuf, roller skiing and technique drills to activities one might not immediately associate with cross-country skiing and biathlon: climbing trees, surfing and tight rope walking. So gather a bunch of friends, go somewhere different and dig into the mud.
