Madshus Marathon Team racer Stanislav Rezac (CZE) had already nailed the overall victory in the FIS Marathon Cup before he stepped up to the start line for the last event of the season, the 2012 Norwegian Birkebeiner on Saturday.
Despite finishing 35th in the Birkebeiner on Saturday, Rezac took home 405 points for the overall 2012 Marathon Cup season. Anders Aukland (NOR) who ended up with 311 points after winning the Birkebeiner, was second overall. Rezac’s lead in the overall Marathon Cup going into the last event was so impressive that even a 35th place left him with a winning margin of nearly 100 points.
Madshus Marathon Team racer Jörgen Brink (SWE) was third overall in the 2012 FIS Marathon Cup with 288 points total. Brink delivered an impressive hat trick when he won the 2012 Vasaloppet just a couple of weeks prior to the Birkebeiner. Brink is the first skier to produce a true hat trick in the Vasaloppet on modern skis.
