What a flying start to the World Championships!

February 13, 2023

Sturla Holm Lægreid kicks off the IBU Biathlon World Championships with a handsome collection of medals.

As reliable as the mailman, Madshus racer Sturla Holm Lægreid (NOR) delivers from day one at the IBU Biathlon World Championships in Oberhof (GER).

The 25-year-old goes straight for the podium in the first race of the 12-day championships: the mixed relay on February 8.

Starting his leg in fifth position and nearly minute behind, Lægreid nails every target, posts the fastest leg time of the day and pulls Norway up to first place and on track to the gold medal.

Two days later, he hauls into third place in the sprint, setting himself up nicely for the pursuit on Sunday. And clearly on a roll, he moves up to second place in the pursuit, taking home his third medal in three races.

Lægreid is now heading into the second week of the championships with one medal of each kind.

Additionally, on the Ski Classics long-distance circuit, Alvar Myhlback kicks off the weekend winning the Ski Classics “Orlen Benzina” sprint race on Friday evening.

The new sprint event is a part of the Ski Classics Jizerska marathon in the Czech Republic, and the Swedish turbo talent yet again redefines what is possible as a first-year junior facing the established senior elite.

The 16-year-old is now headed back for a Ski Classics double-header on home turf in Orsa (SWE) next weekend.
