More than just medals, the Holmenkollen crowd is known world-wide for its intense cheer and encouragement. German skier Axel Teichmann (Madshus) explains how the spectators are able to turn a so-so performance into a one-of-a-kind experience.
Finishing in 13th place, 1 minute and 28.12 seconds behind the winner, was not what Teichmann had aimed for in the 15K classic interval start race on Tuesday, typically one of his strongest events. But skiing at Holmenkollen, Oslo, the legendary venue that has been host to no less than four of Norway’s five World Championships, brings out a smile regardless of results and ambitions.
“The crows are amazing. They are so huge, and they are everywhere. All along the course, you are never alone,” Teichmann said. “They always make you want to race hard and give them what they came for.”
But while the Madshus veteran felt like he skied a decent race, the clock was not on his side in the challenging terrain, by many coined the most brutal courses on the World Cup.
“I actually skied pretty well, so I have no idea where the time went,” Teichmann said to reporters after his race.
“I had a goal of being in the top eight,” he said, explaining that coming into the World Championships in Oslo, he was optimistic. “Things have been going well both in skiing and personally.”
Teichmann will have more chances to race during the Holmenkollen World Championships, which conclude with the 50K freestyle race on Sunday, March 6.
